When I Travel by Airplane, I Like to See Outside the Window
Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport

There’s something magical about flying. As the plane roars down the runway and lifts into the sky, a sense of awe washes over me. No matter how many times I’ve flown, I always request a window seat if I can help it—because when I travel by airplane, I like to see outside the window.
From the moment the plane takes off, I’m glued to the view. Watching the world shrink beneath me is like stepping into a living, moving painting. The tiny cars, the grids of buildings, the winding rivers—they all start to resemble a miniature model town. It reminds me of how vast the world is, and how small we really are in the grand scheme of things.
One of the most breathtaking moments comes when we break through the clouds. Suddenly, the dull gray skies turn into an ocean of fluffy, white cotton stretching as far as the eye can see. The sun glows brighter, the sky becomes a deeper shade of blue, and for a moment, it feels like I’m in another world. It’s peaceful and silent up there—like the plane is gliding through a dream.
Flying during sunrise or sunset is an experience in itself. The sky puts on a show of colors—orange, pink, purple, and gold blending together like an artist’s masterpiece. I find myself lost in those colors, sometimes reflecting on life, sometimes just soaking in the beauty of nature.
Then there are the moments when we pass over mountains, oceans, and islands. I once flew over the Alps and was stunned by their snow-covered peaks poking through the clouds like sleeping giants. Another time, flying over the Middle East, I watched endless golden sands roll beneath us like a sea of dunes. Every flight offers a new and unique perspective on the world below.
Looking out the window also fills me with anticipation. If I’m heading to a new destination, I try to guess where we are, imagine the cities or towns below, and wonder about the lives of the people down there. If I’m returning home, I feel a sense of warmth seeing familiar landscapes—like a quiet welcome back.
In an age where flying has become routine, the view from the window reminds me that travel is still an extraordinary thing. It’s a reminder of how connected our planet is and how lucky we are to see it from above.
So, if you ever find yourself flying, I encourage you to choose the window seat. Put away the screen for a while. Watch the clouds roll by. See the mountains, the oceans, the cities, and the fields. Let yourself be amazed.
Because the world looks different from above—and it’s absolutely beautiful.
